Chapter 1 · Topic 5
BOM: Lead time
- Total duration from process start to output item availability
- Drives backward scheduling — when o9 must start production
- Typically expressed in hours or days depending on the process
- Can include queue time, setup time, and run time components
- Longer lead times require earlier supply signals to avoid stockouts
BOM Lead Time is the total duration of a transformation process — the time from when production starts to when the output item is available for use or shipment. The planning engine uses lead time to offset supply signals backwards from a due date: if a product is needed on day 10 and takes 3 days to make, production must start on day 7. Accurate lead times are critical for generating feasible plans that don't promise what can't be delivered.
